Former NNPCL CEO Mele Kyari has denied reports claiming he’s in EFCC custody over a $2.9 billion refinery rehabilitation probe. In a statement via X, Kyari called the allegations “clear mischief” aimed at damaging his reputation. He clarified he is currently on a “well-deserved rest” after nearly 35 years of service and expressed his readiness to account for his stewardship both before authorities and God.
The EFCC is investigating the misappropriation of funds allocated to Nigeria’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna. At least 14 senior officials, including Kyari and ex-CEO Abubakar Yar’Adua, are under scrutiny. The Commission reportedly uncovered over ₦80 billion in a former MD’s account.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed ongoing investigations, while President Tinubu’s recent restructuring of the NNPCL board continues to fuel public interest. Kyari urged the media to verify facts and avoid misinformation that could harm Nigeria’s global image.
