Kwara Govt Distributes Free Delivery Kits to Pregnant Women in 193 Health Centres

In a bid to reduce maternal and child mortality, the Kwara State Government has begun distributing free delivery kits to pregnant women across 193 Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Prof. Nusirat Elelu, disclosed this over the weekend, reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality and accessible healthcare for all residents, regardless of location.

Prof. Elelu said the initiative, supported by the World Bank-funded IMPACT project, aims to ensure safer childbirth by providing clean and hygienic delivery materials to expectant mothers, especially in underserved communities.

She emphasized that safe delivery is a fundamental right and that this program addresses long-standing challenges faced by pregnant women, including limited access to essential childbirth supplies.

The PHCs are permitted to charge a maximum of ₦2,000 for other services, though enrollees under the Kwara Health Insurance scheme are exempted. A toll-free line has also been launched for reporting misconduct and lodging complaints.

Dr. Michael Oguntoye, Programme Manager of the IMPACT project, praised the initiative, noting that investing in maternal and child health not only improves health outcomes but also reduces long-term healthcare costs and drives economic growth.

The delivery kits will be available at all 193 PHCs supported under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund and the IMPACT project across Kwara State.
