Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Friday hosted and rewarded athletes who represented the state at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with cash gifts and certificates of recognition.
Gold medalists received ₦1 million each, silver medalists ₦500,000, and bronze winners ₦300,000. Members of the coaching crew were also rewarded. Kwara clinched six gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze medals at the event.
Speaking during the reception at the Government Banquet Hall, Ilorin, Governor AbdulRazaq described the athletes as heroes and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development and athlete welfare.
He also announced the payment of a ₦201 million backlog in sign-on fees owed Kwara United Football Club players and coaches, a debt that had lingered for 16 years.
The Governor highlighted investments in modern sporting infrastructure, including the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, indoor sports hall, and squash courts, positioning Kwara as a hub for talent development in Nigeria.
Top sports stakeholders, including officials from the Kwara State Sports Commission, SWAN, and former Olympiad Hameed Adio, commended the Governor’s consistent support, infrastructure investments, and promotion of youth engagement through sports.
