Panic in Kwara community as terrorists demand N20m levy, threaten fresh attack

Residents of Lalagi village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have been thrown into panic after suspected terrorists demanded a ₦20 million levy and threatened a fresh attack on the community.

Villagers said the threat was issued after armed men intercepted farmers on their farmlands and instructed them to relay the demand to community leaders.

A resident, Uthman Alhassan, who confirmed the development, said the attackers warned of severe consequences if the community failed to comply with the demand.

According to another resident, the armed men specifically directed the farmers to inform the village head that Lalagi must “arrange the sum of ₦20 million or be ready for another gruesome invasion like what happened in Woro community.”

The warning has reportedly heightened fear across the community, with many residents expressing concern over a possible repeat of recent deadly attacks in parts of Kwara North.

Meanwhile, security agencies have also been alerted to a possible attack on Gbabe community in Gwanara District of Baruten Local Government Area.

A security memo dated February 5, 2026, from the Department of State Services (DSS) warned of a potential attack by armed groups suspected to be operating around Kiyoru settlement.

The memo noted growing tension in the area and called for urgent security measures to forestall any attack, citing the history of armed groups operating around the Kainji Lake National Park axis.

The alert was forwarded to the Kwara State Police Command for necessary action.

The latest development comes amid rising security concerns in parts of Kwara North following recent attacks on communities in the area.

Earlier, suspected terrorists reportedly attacked Gidan Sani village near Tsaragi, killing a woman and her two children, while the husband sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Residents across affected communities have called for urgent intervention by security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in the area.
