A political commentator, Saddiq Buhari, has faulted remarks credited to Prof. Abubakar Olarewaju Suleiman on the viability of a Kwara North candidate winning the state’s governorship election.
In a statement, Buhari described as “misleading” the claim that only candidates from Kwara Central can win governorship elections in Kwara State, insisting that such a position lacks empirical backing.
He argued that past electoral outcomes in the state contradict the assertion, noting that voting patterns have not strictly followed regional lines.
Buhari cited previous elections, including 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, to support his position, adding that the performance of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq across different senatorial districts shows that voter decisions are influenced by broader political dynamics rather than regional bias.
According to him, the 2023 governorship election outcome reflected a rejection of certain political actors rather than a lack of support for Kwara North.
He maintained that the consistent electoral strength of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara North should be seen as a political advantage rather than a weakness.
Buhari therefore urged Suleiman to focus on presenting his agenda to the electorate instead of dismissing the prospects of candidates from the region.
He added that Kwara North is not seeking sympathy but a fair opportunity to participate in the leadership of the state.
