Underreported killings, global silence worrisome — Hashim

A former presidential candidate, , has raised concerns over what he described as the growing underreporting of killings in Nigeria and the apparent indifference of the global community.

In a statement, Hashim said recent attacks in , particularly in Shanga Local Government Area, reportedly left over 40 people dead, with local sources suggesting higher casualties amid continued violence and destruction of property.

He added that similar incidents have occurred in and across parts of the North Central region, including , , , and , where scores of people have reportedly been killed in recent weeks.

According to him, the scale of violence, which he estimated could range between 130 and 300 deaths within a short period, reflects a worsening security situation that is failing to attract adequate national and international attention.

Hashim described the killings as part of a disturbing trend in rural communities, warning that such incidents are increasingly treated as routine statistics rather than urgent humanitarian crises.

He also cited the activities of armed groups, including and the , alongside bandit networks exploiting weak security presence.

The former presidential candidate criticised what he termed the muted response of global institutions such as the and the , arguing that the lack of strong reactions reflects a troubling devaluation of Nigerian lives.

He questioned why repeated mass killings in Nigeria no longer trigger sustained global outrage, warning that continued silence risks normalising large-scale violence and human loss.
