Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the arrest of activist Martin Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), describing it as resembling an abduction that fuels fear and weakens public trust in law enforcement.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi warned that such opaque arrests blur the line between legal actions and criminal abductions, undermining national security and justice. He drew parallels with past cases involving judicial officers, saying the disregard for due process erodes public confidence in institutions.
Obi also criticized the economic fallout linked to GTBank’s alleged involvement in VDM’s arrest, noting that such controversies damage investor trust and Nigeria’s global image. He questioned why a civil and legal approach wasn’t used instead.
Addressing the reported abduction of a NANS President, Obi cautioned against the suppression of youth voices, warning that intimidation or forced political alignment undermines democratic values.
He called for a return to a just Nigeria—where youth speak freely, judges serve with dignity, and institutions act with transparency and respect for the law.
