There are strong indications that popular social media influencer Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), may be released from custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday.
A senior EFCC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Monday that while Otse remains in detention, he has not yet been formally charged. However, plans are reportedly underway to arraign him in court on Thursday.
VeryDarkMan was recently arrested by EFCC operatives over alleged cyberstalking. His legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the arrest via his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that Otse was detained alongside his associate, C Park.
The arrest sparked public outrage, leading to protests in Abuja on Monday. Scores of youths took to the streets of the Federal Capital Territory, marching from the EFCC headquarters to the premises of a commercial bank where Otse was allegedly apprehended.
Protesters carried placards with bold messages including “Release Very Dark Man” and “Seyi Tinubu, Are You Involved?” They condemned the arrest as illegal and called for greater transparency in the EFCC’s actions. Demonstrators also pledged to escalate the matter to the Nigerian Human Rights Commission in Maitama, Abuja.
As anticipation builds around his potential release and upcoming court appearance, supporters of VeryDarkMan continue to demand justice and accountability from law enforcement authorities.
