President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
At a presidential reception held at the State House, the President conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and the 11-member technical crew. In addition, each team member will receive a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme and a cash reward—\$100,000 (in naira equivalent) for each player and \$50,000 for each coach and technical staff.
“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see that their dreams are valid and achievable. You represent the hope of today and tomorrow,” Tinubu said, praising the team’s determination, discipline, and courage.
The President also shared personal moments from watching the emotionally charged final, acknowledging the team’s role in uplifting national spirits.
Further support came from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with its Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announcing a ₦10 million reward for each player and official on behalf of the 36 state governors.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu praised the Falcons as role models and affirmed her belief in their potential to win the Women’s World Cup. “You played with passion and reminded the world why Nigeria is a powerhouse in African women’s football,” she said.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude on behalf of the team and dedicated the victory to Nigerian girls dreaming of greatness. “This title is not just a trophy—it is a message of hope and resilience to every girl across Nigeria,” she said.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, lauded the President’s investment in sports and described the team’s triumph as a unifying moment for the country.
The 2024 WAFCON title marks the Super Falcons’ 10th continental championship, reaffirming their dominance in African women’s football.
