The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike following the non-payment of lecturers’ salaries.
In a letter dated September 11, 2025, and addressed to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olubunmi Shittu, the union said the action was in line with a standing directive of its National Executive Council (NEC).
The letter, jointly signed by FUOYE ASUU Chairman, O. A. Fagbuagun, and Financial Secretary, Ngwu Benitho, stated that the strike would continue until the outstanding salaries were paid.
> “This is to notify the university administration that the NEC of ASUU has directed that in any case where academic staff salary is not paid latest by the third day of every month, the affected branch should proceed on strike until the salary is paid.
As a consequence of the above, ASUU-FUOYE Branch has proceeded on strike until our salary is paid. This strike is total, indefinite and comprehensive,” the letter read.
ASUU has consistently maintained a “No Pay, No Work” policy, insisting that failure to pay lecturers by the third of every month would trigger immediate withdrawal of services.
The FUOYE strike follows a pattern seen in other universities. In July, the University of Jos shut down after June salaries were not paid on time, while lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, also downed tools over delayed payments.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is committed to keeping students in school despite the wave of strikes.
> “We will continue to engage ASUU and other stakeholders to ensure Nigerian children are not denied access to education,” the minister said.
The strike at FUOYE is expected to disrupt ongoing academic activities, with students and parents anxiously awaiting a resolution.
