No fewer than 12 people, including the Baale of Ogbayo, were killed on Sunday morning when suspected bandits invaded Oke-Ode in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The assailants reportedly struck around 7 a.m., shooting sporadically and targeting local vigilante members who had mobilised to defend the area.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said operatives of the command and personnel of the National Forest Security Service responded to distress calls but met the bodies of 12 victims at the scene.
“Among the deceased were vigilante members and the Baale of Ogbayo. Four other persons who sustained injuries were taken to hospital for medical attention,” the statement noted.
Ejire-Adeyemi added that security forces, including the police, the military and the NFSS, had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, condemned the attack as “heinous,” while commiserating with the victims’ families. He assured residents that justice would be served and reiterated the command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state.
