The Kwara State Government has debunked social media reports suggesting that nine local government areas in the state are currently under siege by bandits, describing the claim as “false, reckless, and politically motivated.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, said no part of Kwara State is under the control of bandits, contrary to rumours being circulated online.
“The unfortunate challenges we have had in a few areas do not warrant the wicked escalation and fake news being promoted by opposition elements in and outside the state,” the statement read.
The government said it has credible reasons to believe that some of the promoters of the false report were acting as “online equivalents of bandits,” seeking to spread fear among residents through misinformation about alleged movements of gunmen in parts of Asa Local Government Area.
Olukoju also expressed disappointment that the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, reportedly amplified the false information through his social media handles.
“We regretfully observe that Mr. Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” the statement added.
The commissioner urged members of the public to disregard unverified claims and refrain from sharing alarmist content that could cause panic, confusion, and psychological distress among citizens.
“The irresponsible behaviour of spreading fake news makes things harder for security forces who already have enough on their plates,” Olukoju said.
She reaffirmed that the state government, working with security agencies, remains committed to ensuring the safety and peace of all communities across Kwara State.
