As a native of Shonga currently residing in Ilorin, I find myself just a stone’s throw away from my ancestral home, even amidst the persistent and troubling insecurity that plagues our communities in Kwara North. Being a lover of humanity, a dedicated civil servant, and a father, I fully understand the challenges and sacrifices involved in giving to others, particularly when it comes from one’s hard-earned resources.
Last year, I was introduced to Project MOK through my Nupe brother, Salman Alhaji. Intrigued by its mission, I decided to join the cause, eagerly participating in various initiatives and helping to mobilize people for its numerous projects. However, I couldn’t shake off a lingering skepticism; I thought to myself, “Another politician trying to gain popularity.”
Surprisingly, just a few weeks later, I experienced a profound shift in my perception. The founder of the MOK Foundation, Alhaji Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode, provided critical financial assistance to my sister, who had been suffering from a debilitating condition for over seven months. This act of kindness was astonishing, especially considering that Alhaji Muhydeen did not know her personally nor had he ever interacted with our family before this. His willingness to help during a time of crisis left an indelible mark on my heart and changed how I viewed his intentions.
Most recently, I found myself in the company of a friend who shared with me the extensive interventions of MOK across Kwara North. He recounted numerous stories of how Alhaji Muhydeen had helped provide funding for families whose homes had been devastated and for victims of insurgency in our region, all done quietly and without seeking recognition. Had my friend not presented me with solid evidence of these acts, I might have remained doubtful about their authenticity. It left me pondering, “What does he want from our people?”
To clarify my thoughts, my friend reached out to one of Alhaji Muhydeen’s close associates, who offered further insight. This individual elaborated on Alhaji Muhydeen’s philanthropic philosophy, stating, “He is giving back to humanity selflessly; he expects nothing in return.” At that moment, I realized how I had previously missed the essence of his mission. It was a meaningful revelation that reshaped my understanding of altruism and community service in times of need.
