Strong Institutions, Mindset Shift Vital to Defeating Corruption – Ribadu

National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has emphasized that the battle against corruption in Nigeria can only be won through the establishment of strong institutions and a fundamental shift in public attitude.

Delivering the 9th Oba Sikiru Adetona Annual Professorial Lecture at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ribadu—represented by DSS Director-General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi—warned that corruption has eroded state legitimacy, weakened institutions, and diverted vital resources needed for national development.

Speaking on the theme “Corruption and National Security: Impacts and Consequences,” Ribadu linked systemic corruption to Nigeria’s security woes, citing examples like the diversion of military funds and compromised procurement processes, which he said directly affect national defense capabilities.

He praised Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, as a courageous and principled leader in the fight against corruption and misgovernance.

Ribadu maintained that Nigeria’s challenges are not insurmountable. “We must move from reactive measures to proactive reforms by building systems that prevent corruption,” he said. “Integrity, leadership, and institutional strength must guide our path forward.”
