— Programme to Train, Fund, and Empower Corps Members and Youth Across the State
In a strategic move to empower young people and unlock the economic potential of the livestock sector, the Kwara State Government has announced the launch of a youth-focused livestock entrepreneurship initiative. This ambitious programme aims to train, equip, and financially support aspiring agripreneurs across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, during a courtesy visit to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp at Yikpata, Tsaragi District, Edu Local Government Area. She was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed.
Mrs. Thomas explained that the initiative is a key part of the state’s broader strategy to position Kwara as a hub for livestock innovation, youth enterprise, and rural development. According to her, the ministry is collaborating with the NYSC to utilize the Yikpata camp as a central training facility for both corps members and other young people interested in livestock agribusiness.
“Our vision is clear—transforming young people from job seekers into job creators within the livestock space,” she said. “This partnership with NYSC will provide participants with practical training in livestock production, business development, and access to finance, all within a structured and supportive learning environment.”
The programme is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2025 and will be delivered through a public-private partnership secured by the State Government. Participants will undergo an intensive three-month training course, after which they will receive starter packs and input support to either launch or expand their agribusiness ventures.
While the initiative primarily targets corps members, the Commissioner emphasized that it is open to all interested youth across the state. “During off-camp seasons, the NYSC facility will be accessible to other young people who are eager to explore opportunities in livestock agribusiness,” she added.
NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa Joshua, expressed strong support for the initiative, stating that the camp is well-equipped to host the programme. He urged the state government to prioritize security at the facility to ensure a safe and conducive environment for participants.
As part of her visit, the Commissioner also paid a courtesy call to the Etsu of Tsaragi, Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Kpotwa, where she briefed the monarch on the upcoming programme and sought his royal blessings.
The Kwara Youth Livestock Empowerment Programme is expected to become a flagship project under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, underscoring the government’s commitment to agribusiness, innovation, and inclusive youth development.
