Army Denies Report of Bandits Overrunning Troops in Kwara

The Nigerian Army has debunked an online report claiming that bandits overran its troops and made away with weapons and ammunition in Obanla, Kwara State.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, described the report as false, misleading, and intended to demoralize gallant troops currently engaged in counter-banditry operations in the North Central region.

According to the Army, troops of the 148 Battalion (Rear) have continued to make significant gains in ongoing clearance operations across Kogi and Kwara States. During a recent engagement along the Kwara–Ekiti border axis, soldiers reportedly mounted a strong blocking position, neutralizing two armed bandits and recovering two brand-new AK-47 rifles.

“At no point were Army positions overrun, nor was any cache of weapons or ammunition lost to criminal elements as mischievously reported by the online platform,” the statement said. “The publication is a fabrication designed to mislead the public and undermine the morale of our troops who remain committed to restoring peace and stability in the region.”

The Army reaffirmed its determination to continue ongoing operations until all criminal networks in Kwara, Kogi, and neighboring states are dismantled.

“The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its efforts to ensure all forms of criminality are decisively dealt with across the country. We urge members of the public to disregard the false report and continue to support the military with credible information that would aid our operations,” the statement added.

The Army also reiterated its commitment to professionalism and transparency, assuring Nigerians that it will continue to provide accurate updates on its field activities.
