Residents of Al-Mustafa Street, Olorunsogo Area, Ilorin, narrowly escaped a major tragedy in the early hours of Sunday following a gas leak that could have resulted in a deadly explosion.
According to a statement from the Kwara State Fire Service, the incident occurred around 3:32 a.m. when a 12.5kg gas cylinder began leaking profusely inside the kitchen of a building comprising two units of two-bedroom flats.
Upon detecting the leak, the occupants raised an alarm and evacuated the premises while alerting neighbours and the fire service. Firefighters arrived promptly and, with swift technical intervention, safely removed the leaking cylinder from the kitchen to an open area, effectively averting an explosion.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, condemned the unsafe practice of keeping gas cylinders inside kitchens, describing it as a “dangerous and life-threatening habit.”
He urged residents to keep gas cylinders outside their kitchens and connect them through hoses, noting that such precautions could significantly reduce risks in the event of leaks.
Prince Falade praised the firefighters for their professionalism and prompt response, saying their bravery prevented what could have been a community-wide disaster.
