The Kwara State Government has stepped up efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the state through fresh recruitment, restored accreditations, and expanded local partnerships.
The Executive Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB), Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, disclosed this during an inter-ministerial press briefing held at the Ministry of Finance, Ilorin.
He announced that more medical doctors have been employed under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration to bridge manpower gaps and enhance service delivery in state hospitals.
Dr. Malik revealed that six pharmacy departments across state hospitals have regained full accreditation from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) after more than two decades. This milestone, he said, will allow the hospitals to train graduate pharmacists and accommodate 30 intern pharmacists to boost capacity in the sector.
He added that, for the first time, intern nurses will now undergo training across five secondary health facilities, describing it as a major breakthrough in healthcare development.
The Executive Secretary further stated that 1,320 medical students have received clinical training in the board’s hospitals, while medical equipment worth millions of naira has been procured to improve diagnosis and treatment services.
Highlighting the administration’s economic focus, Dr. Malik said the “Buy Kwara” initiative has been expanded to support indigenous pharmaceutical companies such as Tuyil, Sam’s, HMA, and Biomedical, while hospital essentials — including scrubs, lab coats, and bedsheets — are now sourced from the Kwara Garment Factory (KGF).
He also disclosed plans to introduce a digital appointment system that will allow patients to book consultations in advance, thereby reducing waiting times and minimizing conflicts in hospitals.
Dr. Malik reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to Governor AbdulRazaq’s vision of providing high-quality, equitable, and climate-smart healthcare across Kwara State.
