AbdulRazaq Kickstarts Smart City Vision as Govt Begins Work on KWSUED Senate Building, Gate House

Massive land clearing has commenced in the Kwara Smart City as the state government on Thursday officially handed over the construction site of the multistorey Senate Building and Gate House for the Kwara State University of Education (KWSUED) to the contractor, marking a major stride in Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s transformative urban development agenda.

The permanent site of the new university forms part of the First District of the emerging 20-district Kwara Smart City, located in the Alalubosa axis of Ilorin East. The hub, envisioned to host key public and private infrastructure, is the flagship component of the Governor’s ambitious plan to modernise the state’s capital.

Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, who handed the site to MC&T Nig Ltd, said the project reflects AbdulRazaq’s visionary approach to education-driven development.

He disclosed that 30 out of the planned 120 kilometres of road networks across the First, Second, and Third Districts have already been cleared to accelerate the Smart City’s rollout.

“We are making history because we have a visionary leader who understands that building a prosperous state begins with investment in education and supporting infrastructure,” Ogunsola said. “This is largely virgin land today, but in a few months, we will witness unprecedented development — from education and health facilities to housing and commercial hubs.”

He added that the Smart City will feature fully planned residential, commercial, educational, enterprise, and recreational zones connected by sustainable transportation systems, describing the model as “worthy of commendation and emulation”.

Ogunsola further revealed that Governor AbdulRazaq has facilitated 250 housing units from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, along with an additional 100 units under the Renewed Hope Housing Estate.

At the handover event were several dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Alhaja Risikat AbdulAzeez; Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye; Vice Chancellor of KWSUED, Prof. Medinat Salman; and Baale Alalubosa, Alhaji Sakariyau Sonibare.

Modibbo praised the Governor’s prioritisation of education, noting that AbdulRazaq has demonstrated a clear understanding that education remains the strongest tool for empowerment and nation-building.

Ajakaye echoed similar sentiments, describing the Smart City as “a project for the future” built on sustainable living and forward-thinking leadership.

Baale Sonibare expressed gratitude on behalf of the host community, saying the location of the University’s main campus in Alalubosa will accelerate development and improve livelihoods.
