The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced plans to register about 2.3 million members in Delta State, signaling its intention to challenge the long-standing dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state’s political landscape.
The disclosure was made at the weekend in Asaba by Prof. Festus Arunaye, a national member of the ADC Membership Revalidation, Mobilisation and Registration Committee, during the inauguration of the committee’s Delta State chapter.
Arunaye said the large-scale membership drive is part of the party’s broader strategy to reposition itself as a credible alternative capable of delivering what he described as the “real dividends of democracy” to the people of Delta State.
According to him, the ambitious target reflects the party’s growing confidence in a highly competitive political environment traditionally controlled by well-established parties with stronger structures, deeper resources, and wider grassroots networks.
He described the ADC as a party of the masses, stressing that its internal structure does not permit domination by any single individual, irrespective of wealth or influence.
“The ADC belongs to the people. No godfather can hijack the party. Our strength lies in collective ownership and grassroots participation,” Arunaye said.
He disclosed that prospective members would be required to pay a token ₦500 registration fee, noting that the exercise would be conducted through both electronic and physical registration platforms to ensure wide participation.
Arunaye urged party leaders, coordinators, and members across the state to take the registration exercise seriously, adding that the outcome would significantly shape the ADC’s political prospects in Delta State.
He also dismissed reports of internal divisions within the party, insisting that the ADC in Delta remains united and free of factions.
At a stakeholders’ meeting held alongside the inauguration, registration materials—including ADC membership booklets, party flags, branded face caps, and Nigerian flags—were formally presented to local government area coordinators to facilitate grassroots mobilisation.
The materials were handed over by a member of the party’s transition committee, Mr. George Timinimi, who encouraged coordinators to intensify mobilisation efforts at the ward and community levels.
With the membership drive set to commence in earnest, the ADC says it is positioning itself as a formidable political force ahead of future elections in Delta State.
