Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has come under criticism following a viral video in which he pledged to help secure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council election.
In the clip, recorded at a recent political gathering, AbdulRazaq assured party leaders and President Bola Tinubu of his commitment to mobilising support for the APC in Abuja.
“On behalf of the excellencies and many other esteemed colleagues on the committee, I assure Mr President and our party leaders that we will work as a team with local stakeholders and community influencers to deliver FCT to the All Progressives Congress,” the governor said.
He added that he was confident residents of the six FCT area councils would align with the ruling party and demonstrate continued support for its policies and leadership.
The remarks have since sparked reactions on social media, with critics questioning the timing of the statement amid ongoing security concerns in parts of Kwara State.
The backlash comes against the backdrop of recent attacks and rising anxiety in some rural communities, including the February 3 assault on Woro in Kaiama Local Government Area, where dozens of residents were killed and others reported missing.
Following the circulation of a video allegedly showing some victims of the attack, the Kwara State Government said it was working with security agencies and community leaders to verify the identities of those featured and establish accurate figures of those abducted.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government said officials were analysing the footage and engaging local stakeholders to determine the status of those affected.
“Since the incident, there have been varying accounts regarding the number of persons abducted. For this reason, neither the state government nor security agencies have announced a definitive figure,” the statement said.
It added that the priority remained the safe return of affected residents and the arrest of those responsible for the attacks.
Despite the clarification, the governor’s comments on the FCT election have continued to draw mixed reactions online, with some commentators urging greater focus on security and humanitarian concerns within the state.
