Swift intervention by the Kwara State Fire Service on Wednesday prevented a potential tragedy after a petrol tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned at Kpasa Bridge, along the Ogbomosho Express Road in Eyenkorin.
The tanker, with registration number ARG 680 SO, was said to be transporting fuel from Lagos to Sokoto when it reportedly suffered a brake failure, causing it to lose balance and overturn, spilling petrol around the scene.
Upon receiving the distress call, firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service immediately arrived at the scene, secured the area, and drenched the surroundings to prevent ignition under the scorching sun. The team remained on standby as the product was safely transferred into another empty tanker.
Their swift and professional response prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion, earning commendation from residents and road users.
Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, lauded his team’s efforts and cautioned drivers especially those conveying flammable materials—to maintain their vehicles regularly, particularly the braking systems.
He further urged motorists to prioritize safety and compliance with driving standards, noting that vigilance and maintenance remain the best safeguards against road disasters.
