The Kwara State Government has directed the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to step aside from office following the recent student protest that rocked the institution.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also constituted a three-member committee to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the protest and recommend lasting solutions to prevent a recurrence.
The panel is headed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, with the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr. Mercy Olufunke Shittu, as members.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the committee has been given two weeks to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the governor.
The terms of reference of the panel include examining the factors that led to the protest and how it was handled, proposing measures to forestall similar incidents in the future, and making recommendations to strengthen the growth and stability of the institution.
Meanwhile, the governor has directed that the most senior Deputy Rector should assume leadership of the polytechnic in an acting capacity pending the outcome of the investigation.
The committee is also expected to engage relevant stakeholders, including management, students and other interested parties, as part of its fact-finding mission.
