PDP chieftain Gambari declares for Kwara gov race

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Omar Bolaji Gambari, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Gambari made the declaration on Monday during a press briefing in Ilorin, where he unveiled his governance blueprint and outlined his vision for the state.

The PDP chieftain said his ambition was driven by a desire to serve the people and address the developmental challenges facing the state.

“My ambition is deeply rooted in service, and I understand that service is truly a noble calling,” he said.

He also unveiled his campaign philosophy, tagged the “OMARi Agenda,” which he said is built on five pillars — people, protection, prosperity, politics and partnership.

According to him, the agenda is designed to promote inclusive governance, transparency and responsiveness to the needs of citizens.

“The people are the most important part of any nation. Our agenda is people-centred. The people must have fair and equal access to healthcare, education, housing and employment opportunities,” he said.

Gambari added that security would be a major focus of his administration, noting that tackling the root causes of crime such as poverty and social exclusion would help ensure safety across the state.

“We all deserve to live in a peaceful and secure environment. Our people must feel safe in their homes and confident in the institutions meant to protect them,” he said.

The governorship aspirant also emphasised economic growth and shared prosperity, stressing that improving livelihoods would help reduce poverty and hunger.

He pledged to promote transparency in governance and encourage greater citizen participation in decision-making processes.

Gambari also proposed the establishment of Kwara North and Kwara South Development Commissions to address regional development concerns and ensure balanced growth across the state.

He further highlighted agriculture as a key driver of economic development and called for improved security in farming communities.

“We must use our comparative advantage in agriculture and go back to the farm, but security must come first because farmers need safe environments to work,” he said.

The PDP chieftain also promised to prioritise job creation, youth empowerment and improved education through better schools and teacher training programmes.

Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections have begun to gather momentum in Kwara, with consultations and declarations gradually emerging within political parties.

Gambari, a businessman, lawyer and farmer, previously contested for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2018 under the PDP.
