The Kwara Central Elders Caucus of the All Progressives Congress has rejected moves to zone the state’s governorship seat to Kwara South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, which rose from an extraordinary meeting in Ilorin, warned that such a decision could affect the electoral fortunes of the party in the state.
In a communiqué signed by its chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Kobe, coordinator, Alhaji Razaq Lawal, and secretary, Alhaji Gani Alawo, the caucus described the proposed zoning as unjust to Kwara Central and Kwara North.
The forum argued that Kwara South had benefited significantly from federal appointments, listing positions such as Attorney General of the Federation, Group Managing Director of NNPCL, and roles in agencies including NALDA, TETFund and the Federal Character Commission.
It noted that the other zones had accepted the development in the interest of party unity and support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The group, however, warned against taking the support of Kwara Central and Kwara North for granted, stressing that the bulk of votes that secured the party’s victories in 2019 and 2023 came from the two zones.
It urged party leaders at both state and national levels to avoid decisions that could create division within the party, while reaffirming its commitment to the re-election of President Tinubu and the continued dominance of the APC in the state.
