The Kwara Rebuilders, a non-governmental organization dedicated to civic engagement and grassroots development, has concluded a two-week Voters Awareness and Pre-Registration Initiative across four major local government areas of Kwara State.
The exercise, which took place in Offa, Ilorin West, Oyun, and Ifelodun, was aimed at tackling political apathy and encouraging eligible citizens to participate actively in the electoral process.
Bringing Civic Education to the People
The program kicked off in Offa Local Government, with activities concentrated in strategic locations such as the bustling Owode Market. Organizers said the choice of location was deliberate, ensuring traders and residents could access voter education without disrupting their daily activities. The campaign later spread to Ilorin West, Oyun, and Ifelodun, where similar grassroots mobilization efforts were undertaken.
Support Beyond Awareness
Unlike traditional awareness drives, the Kwara Rebuilders went further by providing practical assistance to ease voter registration. Applicants’ data were collated and printed free of charge to facilitate their appointments at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices, where biometric capture and thumbprinting were completed for Permanent Voter Card (PVC) issuance.
Citizens Applaud the Initiative
Beneficiaries hailed the initiative as a timely intervention that bridged the gap between citizens and the electoral system. Many expressed gratitude for the group’s selfless service, noting that the gesture reduced the stress and costs typically associated with voter registration.
In their remarks, community members called on other NGOs, traditional rulers, and civic leaders to emulate the Kwara Rebuilders by contributing to voter enlightenment and democratic participation across the state.
Observers say the program has not only improved access to PVCs but also strengthened public trust in grassroots civic education campaigns.
