A Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominikoron, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Oluwabamise Ayanwola.

Justice Serifat Sonaike ruled that the Lagos State prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ominikoron was responsible for Bamise’s death in February 2022. The judge cited circumstantial evidence, expert testimony, and Bamise’s final voice note as critical proof linking him to the crime.

Although the court found no medical evidence of rape in Bamise’s case, Ominikoron was convicted of attempted rape. He was, however, acquitted of conspiracy and full rape charges in her case.

Additionally, the court found him guilty of raping another female passenger, Nneka Maryjane Ozezulu, in November 2021, exposing a pattern of sexual violence during his time as a BRT driver.

The prosecution, led by Dr. Babajide Martins, sought the maximum penalty. The judge granted it, declaring: “For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead.”
