President Bola Tinubu on Monday formally received former Kano political heavyweights, Senators Rufai Hanga and Kabiru Gaya, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move seen as a boost to the ruling party’s fortunes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reception took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the two politicians were presented to the President by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin.
Hanga, a former senator representing Kano Central, and Gaya, a former governor of Kano State and ex-senator representing Kano South, recently parted ways with the political camp of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to party sources, both politicians left after failing to secure their preferred tickets during the opposition party’s consensus process.
President Tinubu welcomed the duo back into the APC, describing their return as a significant development for the party’s unity and growth in Kano State and across the country.
He expressed confidence that their experience and political structures would further strengthen the APC ahead of future elections.
The two politicians also pledged their support for the Tinubu administration and reaffirmed their commitment to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Their defection is widely viewed by political observers as another setback for Kwankwaso’s political movement in Kano, a state regarded as one of Nigeria’s most strategic electoral battlegrounds.
