Xenophobia: FG receives 268 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa today

The Federal Government is expected to receive 268 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa on Friday following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in the country.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, will receive the returnees on behalf of the Federal Government at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who said the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Alexander Ajayi, would accompany the evacuees and formally hand them over to government officials upon arrival.

According to the ministry, the returnees are expected to arrive aboard an Air Peace evacuation flight scheduled to land in Lagos at about 5 a.m.

The ministry also announced that the screening and registration exercise for Nigerians willing to return home voluntarily had been extended to June 14, 2026, to enable more affected citizens to benefit from the evacuation programme.

It noted that the extension underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare, safety, and protection of Nigerians living abroad.

The ministry further assured that relevant ministries, departments, and agencies had put in place adequate arrangements for the reception, documentation, and reintegration of the returnees upon their arrival in the country.
