Ogun PDP Chieftain Defends Break with Atiku, Backs Southern Presidency

A chieftain of the (PDP) in Ogun State, , has defended his decision to part ways with former Vice President , insisting that his political choices remain his constitutional right.

Showunmi also justified his recent visit to President of the ruling (APC), stating that such engagement falls within his rights to association and participation in a democratic system.

The PDP chieftain, who previously served as spokesperson to Atiku during the 2019 presidential campaign, said his support at the time was based on conviction but does not bind him indefinitely.

“Politics in a democracy is dynamic, not doctrinal,” he said.

Showunmi, who has declared his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship seat, maintained that his advocacy for the continuation of power in the South beyond 2027 is aimed at preserving national cohesion and stability.

He argued that having completed eight years under the late , the North should allow the South to retain power for another four years before rotation resumes.

In his response to criticisms from , Showunmi dismissed allegations against him as baseless and lacking evidence, warning that continued publication of such claims could attract legal action.

He further emphasised that political engagement across party lines should not be misconstrued, noting that democracy allows flexibility in alliances and positions.

The PDP chieftain concluded by reiterating his commitment to his political convictions, stressing that his decisions are guided by principles of equity, national balance and democratic freedom.
