The reconciliation committee set up by the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has commenced moves to resolve the internal crisis that followed the party’s recently concluded primary elections, appealing to aggrieved members to embrace peace and dialogue.
Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin on Wednesday, the committee chairman, retired Col. AbdulWahab Ademola Lawal, described the assignment as a difficult but necessary step towards restoring unity within the ruling party.
Lawal thanked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the Kwara APC Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, for constituting the committee, noting that the recent wave of public statements, rallies and counter-rallies by different interest groups underscored the need for urgent reconciliation.
He described the disagreements as a “family affair,” stressing that despite the differences, members remained committed to the APC.
According to him, the committee has been mandated to engage aggrieved members and stakeholders, identify the root causes of the disputes, facilitate amicable resolutions and submit recommendations to the party’s State Executive Committee.
“We appeal to all aggrieved members to open their hearts and minds as we work towards finding lasting solutions to the current challenges confronting our party,” Lawal said.
He urged party members to avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of worsening the crisis, insisting that unity remains critical to the APC’s electoral success in Kwara State.
Lawal disclosed that the committee had already commenced consultations and would hold reconciliation meetings across the three senatorial districts with local government executives, aspirants, candidates and other stakeholders.
He added that the committee would also engage members of the G15 group, both individually and collectively, while collaborating with other individuals and groups already pursuing peace initiatives within the party.
The committee chairman also called on journalists and social media users to report developments responsibly and avoid publications capable of heightening tensions, assuring party members of a transparent and impartial reconciliation process.
