One person has been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries following a road accident on the Oshodi–Isolo Expressway, Lagos, on Wednesday morning.
The crash, which occurred at about 6:10 a.m., involved a Siena car and a commercial passenger bus. The Guardian observed the aftermath of the incident at the scene.
Officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) said multiple passengers, including two children, were injured in the collision and were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
“One person lost his life, while many others sustained injuries. The driver of the Siena vehicle was not injured. All the injured victims have been rushed to the hospital,” an LNSC official confirmed.
Also speaking at the scene, a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official, identified as Saliu K., said efforts were focused on securing the area and maintaining order.
“Our priority was safety and preventing any breakdown of law and order, including jungle justice against the driver. The police are already on ground to handle the situation, so it should be resolved accordingly,” he said.
The driver of the passenger bus explained that he was attempting to change a tyre by the roadside when the Siena car rammed into the bus from behind. He added that he was returning from a church programme in the Sanya area of Lagos.
According to him, the deceased was also a member of the same church.
Eyewitnesses said the loud impact of the collision in the early hours of the morning drew residents to the scene. They described the incident as tragic, noting that the victim died instantly before emergency assistance could arrive.
Security agencies have since taken control of the area, while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
