Angry women from Gashish community in Local Government Area of on Monday destroyed a military checkpoint during a protest over recurring attacks in their area.
The women, who came out in large numbers, accused security forces of failing to protect residents and alleged possible collaboration with attackers.
Sources said the protesters vandalised the checkpoint in frustration, insisting that the presence of security operatives had not prevented continued violence in the community.
Many of the women, visibly emotional, lamented the repeated killings and attacks, saying youths, women and the elderly remained vulnerable.
“We are tired of burying our children and husbands. The soldiers are here, yet we are still dying. If they cannot protect us, they should leave our land,” said Mercy Dachung, a mother of four.
Another protester, Nancy Gyang, accused security operatives of indifference, alleging delayed responses to distress calls.
“Each time we are attacked, we call them. They come after we have counted our losses. Are they with us or with the killers? We removed that checkpoint because it has not stopped the attacks,” she said.
Also speaking, a women’s leader, Chundung Bot, said the community had lost confidence in the security presence, calling for urgent government intervention.
The protest followed fresh attacks in parts of Barkin Ladi and neighbouring Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed six persons on Sunday night, forcing residents to flee.
Meanwhile, the has dismissed reports alleging the arrest of “Berom bandits” in Danwal, describing the claim as false.
The group said two residents were attacked by suspected bandits, while youths who rescued one of the victims were later arrested by security personnel. It called for their immediate release and urged authorities to focus on apprehending the real perpetrators.
