The Minister of Power has resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the minister said his resignation would take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth transition and proper handover of responsibilities.
The letter, obtained on Wednesday, revealed that the decision was driven by his desire to fully concentrate on his political aspiration in Oyo State.
“My decision to step down is informed by my intention to focus fully on my gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State,” the minister stated.
He explained that the ambition dates back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, adding that he had previously resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same political goal.
According to him, the resignation is also in line with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2022, which bars political appointees from holding public office while seeking elective positions.
The outgoing minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and the opportunity to serve in the administration.
“It has been a rare honour to contribute to national development under your leadership and to play a role in advancing reforms in the power sector — one of the most critical foundations of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation,” he wrote.
He also thanked the President for the privilege of serving the country and pledged continued support for the administration’s efforts toward national development.
The resignation is expected to further intensify political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State.
