Concerned elders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara South Senatorial District have described the party’s senatorial primary election conducted on May 18, 2026, as a “complete charade” and a violation of democratic principles.
In a statement issued on Friday, the group alleged that no credible primary election was held across the 83 wards in the seven local government areas of Ekiti, Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin, Offa, Oke-Ero and Oyun. According to the stakeholders, the exercise was allegedly reduced to the allocation of fictitious figures to aspirants based on financial inducements.
The group claimed that some local government party officials and their aides allegedly demanded money from aspirants, adding that figures allocated to contenders were allegedly determined by the amount paid. They further alleged that many party members, including women, youths and elders who turned out to participate in the exercise, were unable to vote due to the absence of electoral officials in several wards and polling units.
The stakeholders also alleged that result sheets were discovered in the possession of some council chairmen who were allegedly directed to allocate inflated figures to a preferred aspirant said to have been “anointed at the top.”
They insisted that no voting took place across Kwara South and urged party faithful and the general public to disregard any results being circulated by individuals claiming victory in the exercise.
The group called on President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC to investigate the conduct of the primary and address what it described as a “monumental fraud” allegedly orchestrated by money-driven politicians.
According to the statement, the outcome of the exercise should not stand unless party members are allowed to freely choose the APC senatorial candidate for the 2027 general elections through a transparent and credible process.
“The voice of the people must prevail over the influence of money, intimidation and political manipulation. Democracy must not only be preached; it must be practiced,” the statement added.
